Okay, my very first magazine subscription was to the Weekly Reader. But the very first one that I paid for with my own money, the one I chose over all the others on my somewhat lengthy list, was Rolling Stone.
It was 1975, I was a junior in high school – ah, the playful days of youth! -and I promise you I was tempted by the other mags on my list: Glamour, Self, The New Yorker, Vogue, Time, People, Cosmopolitan… But Rolling Stone won out, and I never regretted it. I renewed that subscription yearly for a long, long time.
I read every word of every issue, over and over. And then over again.
What was your first magazine subscription?

I can’t even remember 🙂 I remember purchasing individual magazines, especially something that might have been called “Song Hits” that would print lyrics to songs each week and a small digest sized crochet/needlework magazine — still have copies of both roaming around here. And we loved when friends of my parents would come over, bringing all the back copies of magazines they subscribed to, adding to our already large shelf of magazines. But my own magazine subscriptions all blur with no clear time frame. Was it Rolling Stone? Redbook, which used to publish fiction with each issue? Apartment Life? The Atlantic?

My dad subscribed to The New Yorker, Time, and Newsweek, so I didn’t have to back then – and my stepmother subscribed to Cosmo and Vogue, and my best friend’s mom was always good for stacks of Redbook and Good Housekeeping, so I was covered there too 🙂

National Geographic the US version present from my American dad, one of the best presents ever for a little girl in Germany…

What an awesome memory, Eve – I still love National Geographic 🙂
